Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is one of Mexico’s oldest and most iconic holidays, an event when the dead return to visit their living family and friends. This year, we worked with director Santiago Maza Stern to tell the unique story of the residents of Pomuch, Mexico, and how they celebrate Día de Muertos in the documentary.

Residents in Pomuch, just outside of Campeche, Mexico, trace their Día de Muertos traditions back to the Mayans. Maza Stern’s film showcases the rituals through the lens of three key narratives: a unique bone cleaning tradition dating back to the Mayans, culinary traditions, and beautiful ofrendas to honor their loved ones.
